The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting chillier—but thankfully, there’s a full buffet of new streaming options built to make your transition to fall a little easier. Here’s the best of what Netflix is bringing to the table—er, the screen—next month—as well as a few picks to catch now before they fade into the black hole of the Internet. Goodbye, summer; hello, couch. MOVIES What’s arriving. Joyful Noise Square as a flyover state and corny as grits, this 2012 gospel musical is nonetheless as happy and spirited as its title suggests. I mean, when you have Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, two of the most enjoyable musicians turned (occasional) actors in recent memory, sparring as small-town gospel enemies, and Keke Palmer and Jeremy Jordan as pretty, young lovebirds bridging divides, and a bunch of great, churchified songs to bop along to, how can you lose?

Joyful Noise is not subtle or sophisticated, and maybe isn’t even terribly smart. But it’s good, clean fun—while admirably avoiding too much moralizing or, y’know, conservatism. It was directed by the guy who made Camp and stars Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, after all. Man on Wire A dreamy, inspiring documentary about something dangerous, stupid, and extraordinary: Philippe Petit’s tightrope walk between the Twin Towers of the old World Trade Center. Of course there is a sadness at the center of the film, the towers looming in every frame (and in our memory) like dizzying ghosts, but it’s also a heartening thrill to watch the film recount what happened on that wild day in 1974. (A day also documented gorgeously in Colum McCann’s acclaimed novel Let the Great World Spin.) Last year, Robert Zemeckis tried to dramatize these events in the film flop The Walk.
But they needed no such dramatization, a fact proven beautifully in James Marsh’s stirring, wistful true-life drama. 3 Days to Kill Is this movie, which finds Kevin Costner playing a weary C.I.A. Agent with a terminal cancer diagnosis and one tricky final mission, any good? No, not exactly. Directed by McG (uh huh) and co-written by the great French madman Luc Besson, this action B-movie isn’t the slickest or the sleekest or the most sense-making film out there. But it’s probably got the most style and panache of the many action B-movies that litter the Netflix landscape. I have made it my life’s terrible work to watch as many movies in this genre as I can, including all the questionably financed Nicolas Cage and/or John Cusack joints filling up the Action/Adventure section.

Arrow Saison 4
Compared to those cheapo wrecks, 3 Days to Kill is high art. It may all be a matter of perspective, but you could, on some hungover Sunday, do a lot worse than this one.
