I have a new Dell M4800. When I set it up, Ii installed Windows 8.1, and I allowed the Windows 10 upgrade to occur.

Then, I discovered there is no EZ Transfer in Win10. I tried ZInstall win-win, but that failed, terminating with no status screen - twice. I used the 'reset this PC' after each attempt. Since it had failed twice I then requested a refund, but I got a nasty legalese e-mail threatening me with fraud prosecution. After the second attempt the computer would not boot, and after local DELL next business day service failed to correct the problem it was sent to the Dell repair depot. They determined the SS hard drive had failed and replaced it. (Is it possible the migration software could have caused this?

Who knows.) On return, I tried ZInstall win-win again, and this time it appeared to complete. However the applications I needed most - Microsoft Office - were unusable. I attempted to involve ZInstall support, sending log files from both computers. I was assured I would receive a response within '9 hours'. When I hadn't received a response by the end of the week I sent another email, and got back a form directing me to complete and return the form that basically signed away my right to invoke their '100% guarantee' - in order to invoke their guarantee. Caveat Emptor.

So now, I want to revert to the original Windows 8.1 image so I can at least use EZ Transfer to move files, then reinstall Office manually. But when I try to use 'Reset this PC', it restores Windows 10, not Windows 8.1. And if I try to use the Dell recovery USB, it says 'Windows can't be installed on drive 0 partition 5', with these details: 'Windows cannot be installed to this disk.

The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.' If I click OK and then click the Format link, I get a warning popup, but when I click OK to that nothing happens.

So - how do I get back to Windows 8.1??? Hi Jeff, Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

Bill Smithers - Microsoft MVP July 2013 - June 2018. Thank you Kalpana and Bill. As it happens I already had a Recovery USB from Dell, and spent over 4 hours in chat with them trying to use it.

Unfortunately, in the end, the drive would not boot to the OS, so Dell is sending a replacement SSD imaged with Windows 8.1, essentially what the Repair Depot did last time. Note that this is the second time I have had a new SSD fail and require replacement after having used the 'ZInstall win-win' migration software. It may be a coincidence, but I will not try it again.

Some tricks I learned in the process. Keep in mind that when I was trying these tricks the PC was essentially a brick - on any attempt to reboot I might (or might not) get a Dell logo, and it would end up at a black-black screen (i.e., driver not talking to display), with periodic flashes of disk activity.

You'll know the trick is working when you see an illuminated black screen, but keep tapping until you see a message at the upper right that it is 'Entering xxx' for whatever menu you were trying to get to. If you stop tapping too soon it will be a brick again.

In Win 10, you'll never hit F8 fast enough to get to the old boot menu. However if you hold down the shift key as you click Restart you may be able to do so. When shutting down Windows via the power button, hold that down for a full five seconds so that the button isn't blinking when you release it. When powering up, hold the shift key down as you press the power button, then start tapping F2 or F8 or F12 to get to their respective menus.

I verified this for F2 and F12, didn't try for F8. When powering up, hold down the Fn key as you press the power button. This is supposed to launch diagnostics but didn't work on my PC. The above work on Dell Precision M4800's, and probably on most Dells. The sequences may be different on other PCs.
