I am working on a new IBM Bladecenter setup with a few blades that have the 320GB FusionIO cards. I have high hopes that they will be super speedy for a few VMs running Oracle or some sort of database. My question is this: I want to install 3 vms on the SSDs however the SSDs are not shown when I attempt to create a new VM, only the mirrored drive that comes with the blade. I was able to add the devices as passthrough devices. However, this only allows the device to be used by one VM. This seems silly.

Hi, Both of these devices are detected by the server bios and the drivers are loaded into ESXi however none of them actually get picked up. The are working hardware wise I think as you can see them if you access the pass through menu. The Teradici commands say there is no card plugged in and the fusio-io card is not detected as storage. The server is a DL580 G7 with 4 E7-4860's and 512GB RAM booting from SD card, no FC.

Cards are a HP branded 1.2TB fusion io card and the Teradici TERA2 APEX 2800 card. Will be interested to hear if your using the APEX card to allow CAD/CAM via VDI. I've been interested in the potential to do some solidworks/autocad via VMware view.

This post just made me think of something, if you want to do RemoteFX then you can get better consolidation ratios running Server 2008R2 under VMWare using DirectPath than you can running it natively or under Hyper-V 2.0 due to the limitation on the number of GPU's per OS for RemoteFX and the lack of PCI passthrough in Hyper-V. This made me chuckle. Jesus, thats a huge VDI host. You looking to push the 1000VM's per host limit or something? Doing my math here Assuming you swap to SSD to make RAM not relevent, you could put 4 x 10 core's thats 40 Core's x 16 users per core you could hit 640 users per host. Given a maximum of 2000 VM's per vCenter you could do 3+1.

Now the rest of us run 200 Users on a 1U server. From a power footprint you can likely get more users than me with these, but from a cost/rackspace I think pizza box's still win. How to install portal gun mod gmod cracked. Honestly I'd hate to half to vMotion 500 desktops off a host for maintenance. I'm genuinely interested in what yoru doing care to throw a quick clip, or a blog post or something. (I work for a VMware parter, and get called in to design view enviroments and I've never seen anyone use these monster hosts). The only downside to this design is CBRC is limited to only 2GB per host and I'm curious if it scales that well for what your doing, vs adding more nodes to reduce read IO and boot storms. I prefer the flexibility of 1us as well. OP said 'no FC' which implies no shared storage, so clustering and vMotion seem not to be considerations. If your VDI requirements don't include long-running instances then one might be ahead to load-balance/HA only for incoming sessions and forget live migration and shared storage, making the FusionIOs viable.
